How to Get Cited by AI Answer Engines

Write passages a model can lift and be correct. That means answering the question in the first two sentences, making claims specific enough to be worth quoting, keeping each section self contained, and being unambiguous about who you are. There is no ranking to optimize, only retrieval and use.

What actually changed

Classic search returned a list and let the reader choose. An answer engine composes a response and cites some sources inside it. That difference is small in description and large in consequence.

The first consequence: there is no position to hold. Your page is either retrieved into the context for a given question and used in the answer, or it is not. There is no second place that still gets traffic. This is why I think the word ranking is actively misleading in this context, and why strategies built on moving up a list do not transfer.

The second consequence: the thing being evaluated is a passage, not a page. Retrieval pulls chunks. A model reads a few hundred words of yours, alongside a few hundred words from four other sources, and composes. Your carefully built argument across two thousand words is not what arrives. One section of it is.

The third consequence: being used is not the same as being credited. Models synthesize, and a page can inform an answer without appearing in the citations. That is genuinely frustrating and it is the environment. The response is to be the source of specific things that are hard to restate without attribution, which I will come back to.

So the practical question stops being how do I rank and becomes: if a model pulled one section of this page into a context window, would it have everything it needs to answer correctly, and would quoting me be the natural thing to do?

What makes a passage usable

Answer in the first two sentences. Before the context, the caveats, or the story. If a model has to read four paragraphs to find your answer, a competing source that led with theirs is easier to use. This feels like bad writing to people trained on essays. It is not. It is the inverted pyramid, and journalism settled this argument a century ago.

Make claims specific. Vague is unquotable. "Improves performance" is nothing. "Cuts the round trip from two requests to one, which matters when the client is on a mobile connection" is a sentence someone can use. Specificity is also honest, because a specific claim can be checked and a vague one cannot, which is exactly why vague ones are popular.

Keep sections self contained. Assume the reader arrives at this heading and nothing before it. Restate the subject rather than saying "as discussed above." A retrieved chunk has no above.

Be unambiguous about identity. Who wrote this, what they do, and why they would know. Not for a trust score, but because a model resolving whether your claim is authoritative needs something to resolve against.

Structure so the boundaries fall where the ideas do. Headings, short paragraphs, and lists exist so the chunk boundary lands between two ideas rather than through the middle of one.

Cover the question completely, then stop. Length is not a target. Coverage is. Padding to hit a word count adds text that dilutes the passage a model would otherwise have used.

The durable version: be the source, not a summary of sources

Everything above is table stakes and everyone will do it. The part that lasts is having something to say that is not already in the training data. Original data from your own operation, a mechanism explained more precisely than anyone else has bothered to, a position you will defend. Summaries of consensus are the single most replaceable thing on the internet now, because generating them is exactly what these systems do for free.

How to measure it without a rank tracker

The honest starting point is that visibility here is harder to measure than search ever was, and anyone selling you a precise number should be asked how they got it.

Start with the evidence you already own. Server logs and analytics show referrals from assistant surfaces, and crawler activity shows which of your pages are being fetched by which agents. Search console data still tells you what you are found for, which correlates with what gets retrieved even though it is not the same thing. This is unglamorous and it is real data about your own property, which puts it ahead of most alternatives.

Run a fixed prompt panel. Write down thirty questions a buyer would actually ask, in their words rather than yours. Run them across the assistants you care about on a schedule, and record whether you appear, whether the answer is accurate, and who does appear. The value is not the score. It is seeing which competitor keeps showing up and reading why their page is easier to use than yours.

Watch accuracy, not just presence. Being cited incorrectly is worse than absence. If assistants consistently describe your product wrong, the fix is usually a page that states the correct version plainly, because the wrong version is being retrieved from somewhere.

Check whether your crawlers are blocked. Some sites have quietly excluded the agents that do this retrieval. That is a decision worth making deliberately rather than discovering.

My honest read: treat this as an early and noisy measurement environment, invest in the writing rather than the tooling, and be suspicious of any dashboard presenting a single visibility number as if it were a rank.

Frequently asked questions

What is answer engine optimization?
Making your content usable as a source when an assistant composes an answer, rather than competing for a position in a list. The practical work is writing passages that lead with the answer, make specific claims, stand alone without the rest of the page, and clearly establish who is making the claim.
How is AEO different from SEO?
The unit of competition moved from the page to the passage, and there is no position to hold: you are either retrieved and used or you are not, with no second place that still earns traffic. Much of the technical foundation carries over, but strategies built on moving up a list do not.
How do you measure AI search visibility?
Start with data you own: referral traffic from assistant surfaces and which agents are crawling which pages. Then run a fixed panel of buyer questions across assistants on a schedule, recording whether you appear, whether the answer is accurate, and who else shows up. Treat single-number visibility scores skeptically.
What stops working in AI search?
Summarizing what everyone already says. Generating consensus summaries is precisely what these systems do for free, so a page that only restates the known has nothing a model needs. Padding for word count also hurts, since it dilutes the passage that would otherwise have been retrieved and used.
